Wind
chimes, also known as aeolian chimes, are decorative garden ornaments typically
constructed of wood, glass, metal or shells in pieces that hang loosely
together so they can be “played by the wind.” The specific sound a wind
chime makes is determined by its length, width, thickness and the material with
which it has been constructed.
Valued
for the beautiful music (tinkling sounds) they make as they sway gently in the
wind, wind chimes are associated with tranquility, peace and harmony. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes
with various designs and themes.
In
fact, wind chimes have been around since prehistoric times and today they are
popular throughout the world. Buddhists are well known for their use of
wind chimes or wind bells, attaching them in large numbers to the eaves of
their temples, shrines and pagodas.
Wind
chimes are also an important element in Feng Shui. Chimes with 4, 6, 7, 8 or 18
rods are used for luck while chimes with 5 rods are used to suppress bad luck
or reject negative energy. Metal chimes are believed to be best for the
north, northwest and west sectors of the home, whereas wind chimes made of wood
are said to be best for the south, southeast and east sectors of the home.
Many
healing benefits are also associated with wind chimes. The beautiful
tinkling sound they produce can help improve concentration, reduce stress and
soothe the mind.
Wind
chimes should be hung in a place where the wind is gentle as strong winds may
damage them. Wind chimes will not only add beauty to your home and
garden, they will also bring about an element of harmony and peace to your
surroundings. Perhaps this is why they
are popular gifts throughout the year.
After all, who couldn’t use a little more tranquility?
